Any one who has or is thinking of buying this softeware should join the Facebook group 'Machine Knitting Designaknit DAK. On this site their are experts who can give lots of advice and information. This is an expensive piece of software but it is the industry standard. It is a complex piece of work and is not for the faint hearted, however with patience and diligence you will succeed. It can be used with all types of knitting machine but you will need an electronic if you wish to download patterns direct from your computer. You can get more information from their web site.
It is marketed in the UK bySoft Byte Ltd and by going onto their site you can find out where you can buy it in other countries around the world. You can also get details of the prices and the cables you will need to purchase in order to download patterns from your computer to the knitting machine. The purpose of this software is to enable ordinary machine knitters to be able to design their own knitwear either as a garment or as a piece of fabric to make blankets and cushions.
To cut a long story short as a beginner you do a tension swatch with the yarn and pattern you want to use. You can choose from a range of templates. As you get more proficient you can design your own templates. You feed in the information and it produces a pattern for you which you can then print off.

You can use the standard measurement table or use your own measurements. The measurements can be adjusted to suit your own personal needs. You can then print of the patterns as a schematic or as text.
You can add patterns to your knitware by using the patterns that are already in files attached to the software. There are hundreds of patterns that you can choose from or you can add your own. Pictures and photographs can be made into patterns. Example: My granddaughter drew her name on a board from which I took a photo and cleaned it up using a photo editing software. You can use Photoshop or Paintshop Pro but Gimp and Paint.net are free downloads and do the job just as well.

If you have the magnetic arm and the cable then you can do what is called interactive knitting, where the pattern of your garment is on the screen and you can follow it row by row. As the magnetic arm passes the switch which is on the computer. This is great to see where you are in the pattern and also for doing intarsia. It gives instructions on how to download to your knitting machine if you have that capacity or if not you can see how your pattern will look.
